Furniture

Provide secure padding to your furniture.
Do not use tape directly on wood or painted surface.
Wrap the furniture with blanket or Bubble Wrap.
If possible, remove the legs from the furniture.
Place the screws and wing nuts in plastic bags and envelopes, tape them and place them in the underside of the furniture.
To protect against scratches, coat fine wooden furniture with wax.
Place sofa cushions and pillows in bags, so that they can be used as fillers or pads in the trailer.
Move the drawers with clothes inside it. See that the drawers do not get open during the transit.

Electronics & Electrical Appliances

For electrical and electronic goods, the manufacturer’s packaging is usually done marketing purpose.
But you can to do any additional packing with cardboards and cushioning.
Use cardboard boxes with sufficient cushioning space around it.
Try to use original shipping boxes for computers, printers, and other electronic items.
For easy reinstallation, use label or color code.
Software and CDs can not survive at high temperature. So if you are moving in summer, consider carrying these items with you.
Major Appliances Clean and dry all the appliances at least before 24 hours.
Disconnect and empty washing machine hoses and store it inside the machine.
Remove racks & broiler pans from oven.
Tape the cords to each appliance.
Keep the doors and lids closed.

Dishes & Glassware

Wrap all the breakables in tissue paper.
Use newspaper to fill the extra space in the boxes.
Use pot holders or dish towels to cover the bottom and sides of the boxes.
Pack the plates on their ridges.
If you are carrying silver, wrap it in silver paper or cloth.

Liquids

All the containers containing liquids must be properly sealed so that it does not spill out from the container for any shock or vibration during the transit.
Wrap the liquid container in an impermeable material and add sufficient absorbent so that it can absorb if there is any crack.
Keep apart the cushioning material and bottles, so that they do not touch each other.
Do not use loose cushioning materials, use dense and tight materials such as foam or strong cardboard.

Books

The corners of the books are vulnerable. Hence, books should be packed in good quality ribbed fiber board with a 20mm overlaps at the end.
Where it is possible, place your books in a flyer.
If your books are not appropriate for a flyer, place it in an appropriate sized box with proper cushioning.

Internal Packing

While you are planning to do internal packing, it is generally advised to leave a space between the container and the product packed inside. This space should be filled with various type of padding available. Crumbled newspaper and old clothes can be used for padding this space. Generally the following products are the most available product for this purpose:
Different types of Cushions are available, like Loose Chips, Peanut Shaped Materials, Shred or Rolls of Bubble-Plastic Sheets.
Loose cushioning is usually used to fill in the corners. Generally, very light weight material is used for the purpose and the product is kept at the center and is surrounded by cushions.
In order to avoid the use of Polystyrene, as it is not considered environmental friendly in many countries, the use of polystyrene is not advisable for cushioning.
Generally vegetable based and biodegradable materials are used for cushioning. Many materials found at home can also be used for cushioning, like shredded clothes, cushion stuffing and old newspaper.
The Bubble Wrap can also be used for cushioning. It provides good protection against shock, abrasion and vibration. Being light weight and flexible it is also easy to carry and arrange during the transit.
While packing items and stacked objects, it is advisable to use dividers. The dividers can provide absorption to the shocks.
Usually a Clipboard Sheet, Ribbed Cardboard Sheet or a Brown Craft Paper is used as a divider.
Rolls of grooved carton can be an excellent low cost padding. Foam sheets should be used to wrap fragile objects.
